AEO vs SEO vs GEO: What's the Difference?

SEO ranks your pages in search results. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) makes AI engines pull your content into generated answers. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) gets your brand named and cited in those answers. In short: SEO is about links, GEO is about content retrieval, and AEO is about brand mentions.

These three acronyms get used interchangeably, but they're not the same job. Understanding the difference tells you where to spend your limited time — especially if you're a newer brand that can't win the most competitive game first.

Should you focus on SEO, GEO, or AEO first?

If buyers in your category ask AI for recommendations, prioritize AEO and GEO now — they're less competitive than SEO, and a new site can win AI citations without years of backlinks. Keep basic SEO as a long-term foundation.

Established competitors often dominate the high-value Google keywords, and outranking them is a multi-year project. AI citation is younger and far less contested — there's room to be named by AI quickly if your content is well-structured and corroborated. So for a newer brand the smart sequence is: get the AEO/GEO fundamentals right first (they compound fast), and let traditional SEO build slowly underneath as a foundation.

How do GEO and AEO overlap?

GEO and AEO use the same core tactics — direct answers, structured data, crawlable pages, and third-party mentions. GEO emphasizes your content being retrieved; AEO emphasizes your brand being named. Do both together; they reinforce each other.

In practice you rarely work on them separately. The same well-structured answer page that gets your content retrieved (GEO) is also what helps the AI confidently name your brand (AEO). Treat them as one workflow: write the clearest answer on the web for a real buyer question, mark it up with schema, make sure it's crawlable, and earn corroborating mentions elsewhere.

Does traditional SEO still matter?

Yes. Being indexed and ranking — especially in Bing — still feeds AI engines, since several of them draw heavily from search indexes. SEO isn't dead; it's now the foundation layer beneath AEO rather than the whole game.

Many AI assistants build answers partly from the top search results they retrieve, so being indexed and reasonably visible still increases your odds of being cited. The shift isn't “SEO is over” — it's that ranking is no longer the finish line. Ranking gets you into the pool of sources; AEO determines whether the AI actually names you out of that pool.
